Our recent October Luncheon showcased the Leader In Me initiative; A program based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This initiative focuses on shifting responsibility from the teacher to the student while giving the student confidence, and cognitive skills to handle day-to-day school and life interactions. Children are taking ownership for their learning and creating win-win situations as they seek to understand others and resolve their differences. This program engages students early on in the importance of leadership and getting along with others. Students will develop habits in their lives that will lead to success when they go on to middle school, high school and throughout life.
Currently, this program is enrolled in two Vicksburg schools: Bowmar Elementary and Bovina Elementary. In the state, there are three schools implementing this initiative with 2 of those schools right here in our own backyard. This will develop and improve our schools which will lead to improved test scores, innovative thinking, and young leaders in our community. Since being implemented in Bowmar and Bovina in 2012, test scores have improved, behavioral referrals have gone down, and students now have mission statements. Can we say this is a direct result of the Leader In Me? No… However, we are moving in the right direction so why not encourage leadership growth by getting more schools on board with this program.
